Hey, welcome to WatchMojo.com. I’m your host Melissa. And today, it’s Columbus Day in the United States. It’s a holiday that we celebrate the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America in 1492. Now officially, the day falls on October 12, but it’s celebrated on the second Monday of October.
The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the Unites States, by the time these were sighted in New York, on October 12, 1792, on the 300th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in Bahamas. In 1937, at Knights of Columbus, President Roosevelt set aside Columbus Day as a holiday in the United States.
Now, it is also celebrated in Latin America where it is known as Dia de la Raza, where it celebrates the first encounters of Europe and Native Americans.
